MTV-Projekte in Ghana: ARA

Start dates: 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month

Room and Board: Host family and local foods three times a day

Work Hours: 25-35 hours per week

Duration/ Cost: 150 € administrative fee to be paid before arrival

2 months: 400 €

3 months: 600 €

4 months: 800 €

5-6 months: 1000 €

00216 Orphanage

As a volunteer in orphanage project, participants teach English (3-4 hours a day) in either the orphanage or school (where kids go for day schooling). Volunteers will also help kids to dress properly and reach school safely. Volunteers may also organize games, art lessons, singing, dancing, as well as other creative, educational and extra-curricular activities for the children. This may include training groups in sports, teaching arts and crafts, organizing inter-school football matches, playing music, as well as teaching subjects such as mathematics, world affairs, hygiene, and nutrition.  In the evening, volunteers help the children complete their assignments, monitor academic progress, and assure children complete next day's homework. Some participants will assist in the care of the children who cannot yet attend school as well as lend a hand through food distribution, kitchen work, and garden maintenance.

Skills and Qualification

There is no of specific qualification required for orphanage project in Ghana. However, volunteers interested in working with orphans must have love for the kids and willingness to share their time and compassion with patience and high flexibility.

What to bring: mosquito net, torch, sleeping bag, toiletries, cultural and entertainment materials from your home country, and personal effects. Volunteers should also bring their own working clothes and shoes.

Volunteers can organize several combinations of potential excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. 00 168 Agriculture

As a volunteer, you will work with a community-based group dedicated to the conservation of forests. However, you will mostly work in a nursery which aims to produce indigenous tree species. Volunteers' work include preparing nursery beds, sowing seeds, weeding, trimming, pruning, thinning various indigenous tree species, distributing tree seeds to villagers, and other additional tasks may include: planting, collecting seeds, replanting, eliminating diseased trees and inventorying of fauna and flora depending on the season.

Skills and Qualification

There is no need for specific qualifications for the conservation project in Tanzania. However, volunteers interested in work in this project should have a love for the nature. Additionally, volunteers should be aware that this particular conservation project's work is physically demanding.

How to get to the project site: Volunteers are taken to the project site after orientation. However it should be noted that they have to bear their own transport cost to the project site.

00217 Teaching

Volunteers will teach conversational English, Math, or Science to students who are between the ages of 5 -10 in primary schools and 11-16 in junior secondary schools. They will also read literature and improve the low comprehension level and poor pronunciation of students, provide theoretical and practical assistance and aide the teachers and interact with the students. Typical day involves eating breakfast early morning and then going to teach the students for the first half of the day. After lunch, volunteers will then help other teachers in school and arrange extracurricular activities like games in the school. Evenings and weekends are free time for the volunteer to experience the immense culture of the cities.

 Ghana has 3 academic semesters a year:


1st TERM:
Start Date: January 10 to April 12
School Holiday: April 13 to May 1


2nd TERM:
Start Date: May 2 to August 4
School Holiday: August 5 to September 12


3rd TERM:
Start Date: September 13 to December 15
School Holiday: December 16 to January 1


Note: These dates vary slightly from year to year. They also vary from school to school and should be treated as approximate rather than confirmed dates.

Volunteers can stay from a period of two to six months. Your stay can be extended beyond six months on a case by case basis (depending upon the school's requirement).

There is no specific qualification for teaching project in Ghana except fluency in English and a love for the children.

00218 Health Care

A volunteer's role can range from observational to basic assistance, depending on their level of prior experience. Volunteers will be working with doctors, spending time in various departments of a busy hospital like Gynecology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Surgery. Changing bandages, taking blood pressure and contributing to education about basic prevention are examples of how volunteers engage in this type of placement. An important element of these placements is learning about healthcare practices in different cultures including: assisting doctors and nurses in local hospitals, working in various departments like Gynecology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Surgery, changing bandage, taking blood pressure, and educating people on basic prevention and first aid

Skills and Qualification

Health volunteers must have proof of qualifications as a healthcare professional, medical student, doctor or nurse. Volunteers must have medical background to volunteer in this project.

00219 Community Development

The idea is to bring foreign volunteer to Ghana and exchange cultural and work experience and to contribute new impulses and fresh ideas that may be useful in Ghana and the volunteers' home society. All volunteer placements are individually developed and the volunteer's activities will be arranged in advance. The responsibility of the volunteer depends on his/her skills and interests. For example: A law student supports a community by sharing information on their land rights or a volunteer with skills in development work supports an organization to write reports and proposals for fundraising.

Skills and Qualification

The volunteers should be genuinely interested in and committed to the Ghanaian culture. Basic skills in the field he/she wants to be placed are highly appreciated. A special qualification is not necessary. The volunteer should be at least 20 years old.

00210 HIV/AIDS Prevention and Counseling

Volunteers take care of HIV/AIDS infected kids and people as well as get them engaged in educational and training activities meant to increase awareness and stop the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in Ghana. Volunteer help would be highly valuable in the following activities; caring and encouraging HIV/AIDS affected, counseling and educating in hospitals and communities, raising personal risk perception among the youth, men and women by involving them to actively participate in HIV/AIDS preventive education in the district and helping various HIV/AIDS organizations in their community outreach programs (hospice care, recreational and educational programs, voluntary HIV counseling and testing, and educational seminars and conferences on the virus within the local community).

00212 Computer Training

Volunteers assist in providing free computer training to under-privileged students. The training will be in any of the following areas: Introduction or windows, Internet Orientation, Ms. Word, Ms. Excel (spread sheet), Ms. Access, Ms. Power Point, Ms. Front page, Publisher, Adobe Page maker, Coral Draw, Adobe Photo shop, typing etc. There will also be some computer hardware training in addition to the software training, depending on the knowledge and skills of the volunteers. The target groups of people we have been focusing on training them computer skills are under-privileged people such as people from poor income families who as a result of that have become school drop outs, unskilled youth and in some cases commercial sex workers. This is to enable them acquire employable skills to enable them live dignified lives for personal and national development. It is required that a group of 7 or more volunteers participate in this program.

Skills and Qualification

Basic level of skills: organizational ability, computer skills for assistance with teaching of youth and office administration, assistance with computer literacy and applications. Ability to work with youth.  Manage and create a data base for information Management of a website would also be of value
