00216 Orphanage

Most tasks and roles to be undertaken by the volunteer are not structured in an orphanage. There is always the need for the volunteer to have much self drive and take much more initiatives.   Such initiatives however have to be discussed with the appropriate authorities to reduce conflicts and solicit their support in its implementation. As a volunteer in an orphanage project, participants might teach some subjects in either the orphanage school, or at the school where the children attend. Volunteers might also help children to dress properly and reach school safely. Volunteers may also organize games, art lessons, singing, dancing, as well as other creative, educational and extra-curricular activities for the children. This may include training groups in sports, teaching arts and crafts, organizing inter-school football matches, playing music, as well as teaching subjects such as mathematics, world affairs, hygiene, and nutrition.  In the evening, volunteers help the children complete their assignments given at school, monitor academic progress, and ensure children’s preparedness for the next day's school. Some participants will assist in the care of the children who cannot yet attend school as well as lend a hand through feeding the young ones, assisting in kitchen work, monitoring of the children’s health and working in the garden.
