MTV in Indien UDAVI

Here you find the UDAVI MTV-program for 2012:

The project fields will mainly be in Chennai and in rural areas around Chennai.
The projects described above are seasonal and vary accordingly.
The minimum stay for the projects is 3 months.

Costs: UDAVI is a non–profit organization and does not have external funding.
We work only with local organizations that want support of volunteers.
Participation Fee - 175€/month

Accomodation: Accommodation for volunteers can either be at the project, in a local host family or in a hostel depending on the project, location and availability. You could be sharingrooms with 2-3 volunteers. Volunteers should be ready for basic accommodation and basic Indian food. As part of the community living experience, volunteers are expected to adjust to shared bedrooms, strict timings, house rules and dress code.

Dates: The starting date of the voluntary service is the First Monday of the month: The voluntary service will start with an introduction in Chennai.

1.   Name of the project:  UDAVI 01 - R.C High School

      Place: Maduranthakam, Region: Tamil Nadu, India

 

2.    Number of Volunteers: 2
Starting date: January - December, Holidays: October - first week and May - full month.

 

3.      Description of the project: R.C. High school is located at Gandhi Nagar, Maduranthakam, Tamil Nadu which is 80 km away from Chennai. It was started hundred years back by the diocese of Pondy as a primary school and currently under the management of Salesians of St. John Bosco and presently upgraded to a high school. This school through its hundred years of service is catering to the educational needs of the children belonging to the poor dalit communities. The people of the community are mostly uneducated and financially poor. The school provide free education to the children and the only school helping the very under privileged children in the locality. In the school campus a vocational technical training centre is being run. Adolescents are given training in computer, welding, driving and carpentering.

 

4.      Field of work: Teaching English, organizing recreational activities, organizing creative activities, conducting health activities, assisting in vocational training and organizing summer camp and Christmas celebration programs. 

 

5.      Qualification required:

·         Interested to work with children.

·         Creativity skills to impart new skills to children

·         Able to coordinate with staff and children

Special qualification recommended:

·         Teaching skills

·         Recreational activities

·         English language

·         Skills in art work

·         Willingness to work in rural setting 

 

6.      Description of the task of the volunteer:

·         Teaching English

·         Assisting technical teacher in imparting vocational training

·         Organizing play activity for the children

·         Theatre program for the children

·         Organizing Christmas celebration

·         Involve in organizing health camps for children

·         Training children in drawing and painting.

 

7.      Accommodation: The volunteer will stay with a host-family in Maduranthakam or in an apartment

 

1.      Name of the project: UDAVI 02 - St. John Bosco High school  

Place: Kandachipuram, Villupuram Region: Tamil Nadu, India

 2.  Number of Volunteers:  2        
Starting date: January - December, Holidays:  October - first week and May - full month.

3.   Description of the project: St. John Bosco High school is located at Kandachipuram village which is 20 km from villupuram, which is south of Tamil Nadu. The school was started in the year 1990. The correspondent of the school is Mr. D. J. Antony Raj who hails from the same village. This school has a strength of 550 students. Most children attending this school belong to the underprivileged community. The community people are mostly uneducated, involved in agricultural work and daily wage earning. The children attending the school are looked upon as the future educated generation for the families. Ensuring quality education and creative skill to the children is the prime aim of the project.

 

4.      Field of work: Teaching English, organizing recreational activities, organizing creative activities, conducting health activities, organizing creativity workshops and Christmas celebration programmes.

 

5.      Qualification required:

6.      Description of the task of the volunteer:

1.      Name of the project:  UDAVI 03 - St. John Bosco Children’s Home   
Place:  Kandachipuram, Villupuram       Region: Tamil Nadu, India

 

2.      Number of Volunteers:   2                     Starting date: January – December, Holidays : May – Full month

 

3.      Description of the project: St. John Bosco Children’s Home was started in the year 1997. It is located at kandachipuram which is 200 km away from Chennai. Children who are orphaned or having an insecure home are provided residential care. Most of the children are from the neighbourhood. At present in the home there are 49 children. Apart from providing accommodation and food the children are sent to school to have their formal school education. The children at the home need individual care and support to have a happy childhood. Providing a happy place with recreational activity and ensuring quality education is the prime aim of the project.

 

4.      Field of work: Organizing recreational activities, organizing children to have a structural programme in the home. Providing care and support to the children, organizing creative activities conducting health awareness programme, organizing Christmas celebrations, teaching English and supporting children with their home work.

 

5.      Qualification required:

·       Motivated to extend Care and support to children

·       Creativity skills to impart new skills to children

·       Organize cultural events.

·       Able to coordinate with staff and children.

6.      Description of the task of the volunteer:

·       Take care of the children at home

·       Organizing play activities for the children

·       Organizing physical exercise classes for the children

·       Supporting in self organizing the children

·       Organizing Christmas celebration

·       Organizing creative workshop

·       Workshop on health and hygiene

 

7.      Accommodation:  The volunteer will have the possibility to:

·       Stay in a hostel in the school campus

·       Stay in a separate room in the home itself.

 

 

1.      Name of the project:  UDAVI 04 Rehabilitation for the displaced   
Place:  Chennai        Region: Tamil Nadu, India

 

2.      Number of Volunteers: 2                  Starting date:  January - December

 

3.      Description of the project: This project focuses on people living in relocated, resettled areas in the outskirts of Chennai. Due to beautification of Chennai and resettlement of victims of Tsunami from the coastal area, nearly 21,500 families have been shifted to Kannagi Nagar, Okiyam Thuraipakkam and Chemencherry, which is 25 Kilometers away from city of Chennai (appr. 2h by bus from Chennai). As an attempt towards this the slum communities are gradually being relocated to resettlement areas in the outskirts of Chennai. Most of the displaced families belong to the marginalised dalit community who lived in the coastal area more than 40 years ago, engaged in fishing related activities. The major issues in the displaced communities are unemployment, school dropouts, child labour, inadequate health facilities and lack of basic facilities such as inadequate housing, water, drainage, electricity, roads, transportation and recreation facilities, gender equalities. UDAVI's activities are supporting children's education, health, recreation, livelihood activities for women headed families, vocational training and job placement to the unemployed youth and ensuring rights towards basic amenities through community based activities.

 

4.      Field of work: Organizing recreational activities for the children’s club members, organizing creative activities, conducting health activities, organizing Christmas celebration, English teaching in the primary school and high school at the displaced community itself.

 

5.      Qualification required:

1.      Name of the project: UDAVI 05 - Rehabilitation for street and working children
Place:
Chennai Region: Tamil Nadu

 

2.      Number of Volunteers: 2 Starting date: January – December

 

3.      Description of the project:  The reality of the street child is the vicious face of poverty, sickness and exploitation. The tragedy is, that those who bear it are themselves innocent, lonely and frightened young children. Street Children (runaway) are those who are living on/and of the street with, without and occasionally with family contact. Various factors like family problem, like alcoholism, child abuse, ill treatment by stepparents, unemployment and poverty are push factors that make the child take the drastic step of leaving the home. Other pull factors that attract the child towards the city are the exciting experience of city life, glamorized by magazines and movies. But ground realities they land up in rag picking, in the hands of anti social elements and various health hazards and in deplorable condition. Since 1997 UDAVI’s short stay home has been consistently reaching out to the unreached children on the street and has gradually developed a holistic rehabilitation programme. This programme has various different facets such as Street contact, Street Education, Health care, counseling, home placement, vocational training and job placement. UDAVI aims to develop the child in a holistic manner - physically, emotionally, psychologically, socially, morally and financially thus enabling them to settle comfortably in society. This programme is implemented at Koyambedu whole sale market (Vegetable, Fruit and flower whole sale business center) and mofusil bus terminus (Chennai city bus terminus which is linked with other districts and parts of South India).

 

4.      Field of work: Teaching English, Health education and awareness, counselling, recreational activities, vocational training skills, Christmas celebration and organizing picnics.

 

5.      Qualification required:

·       Interested to work with the street boys

·       Creativity skills to evolve innovative ideas for the implementation of new activities for the betterment of the street children’s life.

·       Able to coordinate and work with the staff team

 

Special qualification recommended

·       Experience in Teaching English

6.      Description of the task of the volunteer:

·       Counselling street children

·       Recreational and creative activities

·       Awareness on health and social living

·       Structuring the daily life of the children at the shelter

·       English classes for the children of the flower market

·       Assist the staff team in documentation, research and resource mobilization

·       Organizing Christmas celebration

·       Mobilizing funds for organizing picnics and new ventures for the children.
