CIVS/MLTV/01/12 MARRIANNE CENTRE

Project Description:
People with a mental disability in Kenya (approximately 2.9 million) face extra challenges in their lives. Many Kenyans still associate people with a mental disability with black magic and witchcraft and little has been done to combat this stigmatization. Most people with a mental disability in this centre have a mild to moderate mental retardation. However, they can learn and are capable of developing skills throughout their lives. They have a wide range of talents that can be discovered.

The major shortcomings of the current educational system for young adults with a mental disability is that they are too old to be enrolled in a primary school, because of this, Marianne center was therefore established in the year 2010 to focus on people with a mild to moderate mental disability from the age of 16 till 50 years. Establishing a training center for this group has given them and their parents hope for a better future.
Currently, the centre has 38 students. The classes are divided according to the student’s abilities varying from Down syndrome to Autism. The young adults are trained in basic skills of life and vocational and income generating activities. CIVS/MLTV/04/12 CHILDREN RESCUE MISSION

Project Description:
The Children Rescue Mission, Kenya (CRM) was founded in 2005 following an increasing need for care of the increasing number of orphan children in Winam, area near Kisumu. From the late 1980s, children in this area became orphaned and destitute at increasing numbers. This was mainly due to the HIV/AIDS scourge, compounded by high levels of poverty in the area. By late 1990’s and in the turn of 2000, the number of orphaned children was overwhelming. The traditional culture among the local communities of supporting disadvantaged relatives in the form of their extended family could not contain the needs. The number of orphaned children, both total (both parents dead) as well as the single parented orphans that access only single meals in a day, who were not attending school, who walked in tattered clothing, and who slept without bedding became clearly noticeable as they frequently just walked to other fairly able households to beg for food. It was after taking in such needy children into their residences that the founders of CRM realized a common activity and decided to establish a feeding and care center for such affected children.
The activities of the center are locally coordinated by Tropical Focus for Rural Development, a local non-governmental organization. CRM currently accommodates and fully cares for 15 children. Care provided also includes educational needs, medical care, and clothing.
Target group:
