CIVS/MLTV/16/10 ROBINSON ISLAND

Project information:Robinson Island was established in the early 60’s as a marine eco- tourism sanctuary. The sanctuary realized the need for stronger community involvement in the management of natural resources and therefore engaged in numerous conservation activities over the years. Its main focus is on awareness raising and environmental conservation activities in Famosa Bay. Thus, it focuses on the formation of a strong network, which closes information gaps concerning environmental education between individuals, community initiatives and other partners dedicated to sustainable development. In 2000 the sanctuary established a community based organization (CBO) comprised of 48 members of resident community. CIVS/MLTV/18/10 COMMUNITY HEALTH VOLUNTEERS

Project information: The Kakamega rainforest is the only remaining rain forest in Kenya. Due to its isolation from similar forest type, it is the home to many unique and rare animal and plant species. Because of high human population, this has exerted negative pressures on the forest, e.g. illegal logging, charcoal burning, cattle grazing, harvest of medicinal plants and general clearing of the forest for agriculture.

Community Health Volunteers was thus established among other programmes to educate the residents around the forest about its fragile ecosystem and to involve them in its co-existence and preservation, ensuring the forest is cherished as a healthy, unique and diverse ecosystem for and by future generations. The other programmes that the project is involved in the community include: HIV awareness; Jigger eradication; promotion of human rights; Orphan support
