3. Description of the local project: The project is located in Agona Swedru. The project involves imparting to the children, who are deaf and or dumb, the skills of sign language, and using the sign language to teach the children various subject areas. The students are between the ages of 5 and 16. It is also possible to organise sign language lessons for parents or deaf and dumb students in the afternoons or extra-murual activities.

ARA-02: ICT-Instructor in a Junior High School

3. Description of the local project: The project involves teaching basic ICT (Information and Computer Technology) to students of a Junior High School with ages between 11 (including lower ages) and 16. The students' high-school is located about 1,5 kilometers away from the project site. As only 5 computers are available in the centre, volunteers need to be creative in methodolgies to teach the kids computer literacy. The town is district capital with virtually all basic social infrastructures in place. The student population of the school is about three hundred. The emphasis of the Ghanaian Educational Reform is on the development of the ICT sector. The project therefore seeks to enhance the capacity of this school to deliver quality ICT training to the students.

Special qualifications recommended: Interest in ICT- education esp. with children and youth; teamwork- experience Computer repair skills are an advantage as more computers are available in class but do not function properly.
6. Description of the tasks of the volunteer: Introduce ICT to children and youth, motivate them to learn and use it, help them to develop the necessary skills, identify problems and resolve them. ARA-03: Teaching in Basic High Schools

3. Description of the local project: The project is located in the rural community called Agona Kwansakrom, ten minutes drive from Agona Swedru (the district capital), in the Central region of Ghana. The insufficient staff strength in most rural communities has been the rationale for the institution of the project. The Junior High School is for children between the ages of 12 and 18. It is expected that the project would help improve in the educational delivery in this rural community. The school population stands at around 100.

ARA-04: Teaching in Basic High School (Multiplicator of HIV AIDS Awareness Campaigns)

3. Description of the local project: The project is located in the rural community called Agona Kwansakrom, ten minutes drive from Agona Swedru (the district capital), in the Central region of Ghana. The unavailability of sustained HIV/AIDS education in most rural communities has been the rationale for the institution of the project. The Junior High School is for children between the ages of 12 and 16. It is expected that the project would help improve in the educational delivery in the school. The school population stands at around 100.

ARA-05: Social Work in an Orphanage

3. Description of the local project: The project is located in the rural community in Agona Swedru (the district capital), in the Central region of Ghana. The orphans are of mixed gender, whose ages are between few days old to about twenty. A kindergarten has been opened in 2009 and volunteers can support the kindergarten team. The idea is to accommodate the volunteer at the project site itself as most support is needed in the busy morning hours and in the evenings when the children come back home from school. During the day, it is only the children of the kindergarten that are present at the orphange.

Qualifications recommended: Experience in the work with children, interest in child care
6. Description of the tasks of the volunteer: Guide orphans in educational issues and free-time-programs; support the everyday functioning of the orphanage, care for children. As the older children are at school during the day, the volunteer will mainly be involved in the Kindergarten. Playing with the kids (age 1-6 years), singing with them, teaching them simple numbers, letters, etc or teaching them life-skills are key tasks in the kindergarten. Apart from working in the kindergarten, volunteers should also assist the staff with organisational tasks: such as cooking, cleaning, washing. Working days/hours need to be agreed upon by volunteer and project host. It is possible to work weekends as the orphange is busy when children are not at school and to take days off during the week instead. It is also possible to work mornings and evenings and have some time off during the afternoon. ARA-06: Nursing Assistantship

3. Description of the local project: This project is located in the Eastern regional capital. The regional hospital serves as a general hospital and a referral centre for the entire region. The hospital is a government funded hospital, and volunteers are expected to assist nurses and doctors in the health care delivery in the Koforidua municipality. Especially in the beginning, own initiative is essential but once staff recognises that you are active and ambitious, more demandable tasks can be given to you.

Special qualifications recommended: Be a good team-player, be able to adapt to new working conditions, patience. Ability to withstand stress as volunteers will face tragical incidences such as severe illness and death.

ARA-07: Primary and Pre- School Teaching and Motivation

3. Description of the local project: This institutional effort is aimed at providing basic educational opportunities. The school is a private school located in the centre of the town, the children live in the neighbourhood. The school offers pre-school and primary school education. The children population is about 500. The children in pre-school do not understand English well. Students do understand basic English in primary school but their levels are very different.

Special qualifications recommended: Interest in pre-school and primary school children, patience, creativity
6. Description of the tasks of the volunteer: Depending on interest and need, volunteers can chose between pre-school and primary school. Generally, volunteers need to support the local staff in teaching and caring for the children (big sized classes), prepare lesson notes, assist the teachers in teaching the lessons and writing exams, assist students in their study time, support children in doing their excercises and mark them. The volunteers can take care of the children while eating and playing. As during the day, the main taks is the assistance of the staff only, volunteers should have the stamina to initiate extra-curricular activities in the afternoons. ARA-13: ICT Instructor in a Senior High School

3. Description of the local project: The project involves teaching ICT to students of Senior High School with ages between 15 and 19. The school is the second largest school in town with about one thousand students. One ICT- Laboratry with about 16 computers exists.

Special qualifications recommended: Practical knowledge/experience in the field of IT highly desirable (repair work, software, hardware), interest in Youth Education, able to adapt to varying situations.

ARA-15: Medical Assistance in Our Lady of Grace Hospital Hospital

3. Description of the local project: The orphanage is located in Begoro, a small rural community in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It has been opened in 2008 and is the home of 27 children who are of mixed gender. Local staff works and lives with the children. Volunteers are welcome to support local staff in their daily duties but also to bring in own ideas and initiative. Most likely, the volunteer will be accommodated at the project site.

ARA-19: Teaching Assistance His Gracious Love Intern. School
