2. Number of volunteers: 2
Starting-date: May or September

Due to its isolation from similar forest type, it is the home to many unique and rare animal and plant species. Because of high human population, this has exerted negative pressures on the forest, e.g. illegal logging, charcoal burning, cattle grazing, harvest of medicinal plants and general clearing of the forest for agriculture. Kakamega Environmental Educational Program (KEEP) was thus established to educate the residents around the forest about its fragile ecosystem and to involve them in its co-existence and preservation, ensuring the forest is cherished as a healthy, unique and diverse ecosystem for and by future generations. The region is mainly inhabited by the Luhya community, one of the largest of the 42 tribes in Kenya. The natives speak the Luhya language, although most are well conversant with both English and Kiswahili as these are the official languages in Kenya. Farming is the mainstay of the local economy and is widely practiced through livestock, poultry rearing and small scale farming of maize, beans, coffee, sweet potatoes, bananas, pawpaw and vegetables. Also tourism within the forest generates a substantial income to the local economy. Project activities are: Farm work, Forest conservation activities, Butterfly farming, Working at the local tree nursery and arboretum, Cultural exchange with the Luhya, Identifying indigenous plant species
