VIVE Mexico - CECYTEM
VIVE 01 Assistance in Teaching English and Global Learning
Project-host: CECYTEM (Colegios de Estudios Cientificos y Tecnologicos de Michoacán)
Place: different villages in Michoacán - see list below Region: Michoacán
Number of volunteers: max. 20
Starting-date: September
Description of the local project: The main aim of this project is to promote the active participation of young people in the community and international volunteers in activities that promote the cultural exchange, education and international solidarity.
Being in contact with international volunteers is important for the local people because it shows them how life is in other countries. There are different cultures in the world and it does not mean that one is better or worse, they are just different and diversity itself is a universal value, yet it is possible to work towards positive activities no matter the cultural differences. This helps the local development of the communities because it shows them the scope of the world cultures and people and helps to reduce the illegal migration. It brings education to the local people motivating them to work for their communities using the local resources of the regions.
Field of work: education, cultural exchange
Special qualifications required: teaching skills, advanced knowledge of Spanish and English, willigness and ability to live in a rural community, ability to speaking in front of groups and to motivate groups, creativity, spontanity, flexibility, patience, self-motivational skills
Description of the tasks of the volunteer:
The volunteer will assist the English teacher of a local school (secondary schools/ age of students: 14-20 years) in a rural community. As teachers are very respected in the communities, it helps the volunteer to quickly enter in the daily life of the community and build positive relations and friendships with the local people. Sometimes the school has other activities (such as cultural or ecological events, sports, music, etc). The volunteer is invited to participate or even start new project activities within the community. These activities and the self-initiative of the volunteer are also a very important part of the volunteer´s work. The volunteers will be part of the teacher’s team and share activities and tasks with them and also will live in local families to complete their integration into the community. They may stay with different families during their weltwaerts time. The volunteer is functioning as an English Teacher Assistant. However, his/her concrete role depends very much on the particular school and location, e.g. the skills of the English teacher, the interests of the students and the interests and abilities of the volunteer. Be also prepared to teach a class on your own. The actual tasks can vary according to the projects current needs and depend on the volunteers own initiative. The volunteer should be open-minded and motivated to adapt to the local circumstances. Cultural exchange and learning are the main aspects of the program. And even if the volunteer will not have the expected success in teaching English, he/she might discover to be a great basket ball coach, theater director or art project leader.
Volunteers will attend evaluation meetings that are organized with all the Long Term Volunteers (however if it is needed then we can organize an extraordinary meeting). All volunteers present what they have done in their communities as well as the aspects they like about the project and the things they think should be changed/improved. However the local mentors in the town and in Morelia are available and approachable by mail and telephone in our offices for any issue the volunteer needs to discuss or speak about.
