3. Description of the local project: A computer room has been opened by Hilltop at Dyamala Primary School (close to Alice- Eastern Cape Region). IT is being taught to pupils of Dyamala Primary School. Additionally, pupils from others schools in the surrounding areas, which do not have any computer facilities on their premises, are being transported to the computer centre at Dyamala Primary School to also use the infrastructure. In the evening the computer centre is used for more IT classes.

Special qualifications recommended: (very) good hardware and software skills, administrative and organisational skills
6. Description of the tasks of the volunteer: Computer skills are being taught at the school during the day starting from simple things such as switching on a computer, using a mouse, etc. to more advanced computer knowledge using different software. Also, a special learning software is being used at the centre which aims at making subjects such as Maths and English more interesting in order to increase the pupil’s knowledge and improve their exam results. In the late afternoons/evenings, IT classes are being taught to the local populations of the area. The computer courses aim at empowering the local population (often unemployed and with limited education), in order to increase their employment chances.
Volunteers will live in close proximity to the project and support a local Hilltop- Trainer at the centre in preparing and conducting the classes.

HILLTOP- 02: IT-Unterrichtsassistenz- Dimbaza

3. Description of the local project:
Dimbaza (close to King William’s Town- Eastern Cape Region) is a community of app. 100.000 people in a rural area within the radius of several rural villages and small locations serving more than 10 schools. Dimbaza Business and IT Centre offers a variety of services to the local population (mainly farm based workers, unemployed, limited education and job opportunities). The Centre offers IT courses to the local population in order to increase their IT knowledge and increase their employment opportunities. Further, facilities can be used by the population for typing letters, printing documents, photocopying, using the fax machine etc.

6. Description of the tasks of the volunteer:
• Assist the local staff at Dimbaza IT and Business Centre in daily operations
• Assist in the organisation and running of computer literacy classes for the local population
• Enhance cooperation with local schools in order to increase the amount of schools and institutions providing ICT- education to students.

HILLTOP-03: IT- Unterrichtsassistenz- Joubertina

3. Description of the local project:
The project, a computer centre, is located in a primary school in the township Ravinia, a suburb of Joubertina. Joubertina is a community of app. 50 000 people in a rural area which is mainly depending on fruitfarms and the fruit packing industry. As the community consists mainly of farm based workers and their children who are both very deprived of opportunities, it is the aim of the project to influence the value and level of education. The computer centre with its 14 computers provides a venue to empower the community with IT-skills. At the Centre, IT will be taught to the pupils during the school day but also to unemployed people and teachers during afternoons and evenings.

6. Description of the tasks of the volunteer:
• Teach children how to use a computer, search the internet, write letters, etc.
• Giving computer literacy courses in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint (to students and/or teacher and/or the local community)
• Providing help, fixing computer problems if they occur
• Assist school children (who will be using the centre) in upgrading their skills in maths and various subject material by using e-learning programmes (Riverdeep)
• Get involved in extra- curricular activities at the school (homework club, study support, esp. maths)

HILLTOP-04: IT Unterrichtsassistenz- Mdantsane

3. Description of the local project:
Mdantsane is a community of app. 500 000 people This is undertaken within the framework of centres based in peri-urban schools and service centres within the Hilltop mentorship programme of which Mdantsane is a key pilot area where we hope to influence co-operation between 5 schools working together to transform the very poor educational environment.

-Assistance of the local trainer in computer skills transfer

HILLTOP-05 IT- Unterrichtsassistenz- Somerset East

3. Description of the local project:
Somerset East is a community of about 150 000 in the Blue Crane area in the Eastern Cape. The local population is defined by poor communities which include coloured and Xhosa people’s of the disadvantaged communities who live in separate areas in each town. People are mainly involved in low-pay farming activities, unemployment in this area is very high and job prospects limited. The IT-Centre is based at a local high school. Students are taught in ICT education during the day and adult computer classes are offered in the late afternoon/evenings.

HILLTOP-07: IT and Office Support- Hilltop Empowerment Centre

3. Description of the local project: Hilltop Empowerment Centre (HEC) is a registered NPO in the Eastern Cape which was founded during the reconstruction phase after the end of apartheid. The focus of the organisation is the empowerment of rural communities in the Eastern Cape through educational programmes, active facilitation and implementation of job creation programmes in the field of computer education, and social & cultural awareness. Amongst other things, Hilltop facilitates and supports 15 IT- centres and set up an additional independent computer training centres in the Eastern Cape. It trains the population in rural areas in IT- skills in order to increase their employment chances. Moreover, Hilltop trains people in repairing and maintaining computers which can either be sold to the local population as income- generating activity for Hilltop Empowerment or be used at the training centers.

5. Qualifications required: Good IT- knowledge and skills (hardware and software) with ability to repair and maintain computers, organisational ability, training/teaching skills for computer literacy classes, computer repairs and applications.
6. Description of the tasks of the volunteer:
Assist Hilltop staff in daily operations
Assist in IT- Trainings (Hardware: repairing and maintaining PCs; software)
Assist the coordination and cooperation with Hilltop IT- Training centers
Assist with the creation and up-dating of IT- teaching material
Assist the maintenance of the Hilltop Website and other PR- related tasks
Motivate the local population to participate in computer classes; enhance cooperation with local schools in order to increase the amount of schools and institutions providing ICT- education to students.
Willingness to travel and visit the Hilltop IT- centres for trouble-shooting activities.
