Voluntary Social Year in science, technology and sustainability (FJN)

The voluntary social year in science, technology and sustainability is a special form of the voluntary social year. Volunteers spend a year working in research institutions, universities, municipalities, associations, facilities for environment and power engineering, with producers and operators of wind power stations or solar plants or agencies for renewable raw materials.
The FJN allows young people to dedicate their time working for the environment, climate protection and nature. Simultaneously they get a chance to get to know professions in this field, which will benefit them in their future career or study choices. Through the combined seminars their social competencies will be further developed and promoted.
The FJN helps deployment sites to directly foster specialised trainees and to bind young motivated people to the institution.

The FJN has the following goals:

  • gaining insight into ecological and economic processes
  • fostering an interest for careers in environment engineering and power engineering
  • active participation in environment and climate protection
  • gaining and strengthening respect towards nature and resources.

For the duration of one year young people in the FJN will work full time and will receive social security. After completion a qualificatory certificate will be provided.

Background

When in 1972 the "Club of Rome" presented a study about the situation of the world economy with the well-known result about the limits of growth, many critics appeared on the scene, already then pointing to the prospective progressive development of technology, science and sustainability. And rightly so, because as we can see today, the advancement of technology (in consideration of sustainability) increasingly progresses. The same can be seen in the growth of fields of training and apprenticeships of sustainable technology and science and this at a disproportional rate. Training companies, the International Chamber of Commerce and universities are reacting to this phenomenon by creating new occupations requiring formal training and degree programmes.

But who in this field can give young interested people an overview, who can give young people the help they need in decision making for their future career choices and who will give a respective training opportunity or offer a respective degree programme?

FJN is a model project in the framework of the voluntary service law, carried out by the ijgd.
