Volunteer Social Year in Monument Preservation
The Voluntary Social Year in Monument Preservation offers you a great possibility to learn about the care and preservation of monuments both on a theoretical and practical basis and to begin to orient yourself in the world of working life. During the Voluntary Social Year in Monument Preservation you will get an insight into the exciting working fields of monument preservation when you
- learn traditional craftsmanship in a crafts enterprise,
- learn to have an eye for style elements and architectural history,
- make contacts with firms, institutions and corporations in the fields of monument preservation and craft, or
- discover a personal way of becoming active in society by taking part in the voluntary service.
The requirement is that you are willing to be active in the field of monument care/garden heritage conservation for one year. You do not need to have a school leaving certificate or training to take part. However compulsory full-time schooling needs to have been completed.
The Voluntary Social Year in Monument Preservation cannot be equated with a training course. You can participate in this social year if you are between 16 and 26 years old.
The Voluntary Social Year in Monument Preservation is recognised as an internship by many handicraft businesses and technical colleges. We do however advise you to first check with the institution before applying.
The Voluntary Social Year in Monument Preservation begins in September and lasts for one year. During this time, participants work in a deployment site that suits their inclinations. This could be a handicraft business, an architecture or planning office, heritage authorities, museums and other cultural institutions. Technical guidance and support is given by the deployment site. Practical work in the deployment sites is supplemented by a theoretical and practical foundation in monument preservation and conveyed during six weeks of seminar work. Ijgd is responsible for the pedagogical support of participants during the voluntary service.
