FAQ on workcamps in Africa, Asia and Latin America
Our partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America are organisations that are active in the field of voluntary work. The organisations find local partners in order to carry out the camps with them. The goal of the camps is the support of local initiatives and projects as well as a cross-cultural encounter and exchange within the workcamp group. Material support plays less of a role in the workcamps.
Most of the partner organisations host workcamps throughout the year so please do not hesitate to enquire about the workcamp dates. Please note which continent you want to travel to on the online application form. You can also add a country preference if you already know where you would like to go.
N.B. Since 2015 it is no longer obligatory for you to take part in a preparation seminar before departure. You may, however, if you like, take part in a preparation seminar. In this case make sure to tick the box concerning the participation of the preparation seminar on the application form. There are three options: Easter, Summer or Autumn. Further information regarding the preparation seminar can be found under "preparation and follow-up".
Workcamps usually last three weeks, but there are also two or four week-long encounters. The composition is an international mix: per workcamp therefore generally not more than two ijgd participants should take part. Camp dates are updated regularly in the data bank. For information regarding an extended stay in the country beyond the duration of the workcamp please have a look at “workcamp packages”. Taking part in more than one camp is possible, but please be aware of the extra conditions in the workcamp package I. Ijgd will only send to a maximum of two consecutive camps.
Your registration will only be processed once the registration fee has arrived in our account. We will then confirm the reception of your application and send you the information CD and the participation form via post. As soon as your entire registration fee has been received by us AND you have filled in the participation form and sent it to us via post or scan, we will send your online application to the partner organisation of your first workcamp preference. Please make sure to read the conditions of participation before filling in the application form.
Workcamp programmes (unlike midterm and longterm voluntary services) are introductory programmes. You should be interested in different living perspectives, be open to new experiences and be flexible. You do not need to bring any specific pre-knowledge or professional qualifications.
Usually with workcamps you will live together with the entire group in a group accommodation (such as a school). The cost for a three week long workcamp lies at around 250 EUR and is to be paid on site. Costs vary according to region and organisation. This sum includes accommodation, food and parts of the administration (such as acquisition of projects, supply and instruction of group leadership, participant administration) and work material, as there are hardly national funds for youth exchanges in the regions where camps take place. The exact amount of the camp costs are indicated in the programmes of the respective organisation. For further information have a look at "costs & dates".
